The resistance training portion of the Roger Wolfson Workout series is divided into three categories: free weight training, resistance band training, and bodyweight training. While all three categories offer unique advantages that may lead you to prefer one over the others, resistance training – no matter which form you choose – offers the following benefits:

Enhances muscle mass

Strengthens bones

Increases joint flexibility

Helps with weight management

Improves balance

Boosts energy levels

Free Weight Training

Free weight training is strength training using hand-held weights – like kettlebells, dumbbells, or barbells. These free weights offer physical resistance, causing enhanced muscle engagement whenever you lift, throw, or push them. The use of free weights has been found to increase strength and balance with greater efficiency than other forms of resistance training, according to research published by the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

Many people prefer free weights to machines due to the fact that they allow increased versatility of motion. Using a resistance machine, for example, only allows a certain range of movement, while free weights allow you to integrate multiple movements into a single, fluid motion.

Resistance Band Training

Resistance bands are elastic bands that require different levels of tensile force in order to pull them. The higher the resistance, the more pounds of force needed to stretch them. One of the benefits of these bands is that each band has multiple levels of resistance; the farther you pull the band, the more force you need, increasing the difficulty. However, it is still necessary to have different bands for different muscle groups.

Resistance bands can be used in a variety of applications, and they offer a great deal of versatility. They can even be combined with free weights to increase the resistance/weight further.

Bodyweight Training

Bodyweight training is the use of one’s own body to provide resistance during a workout. Common examples of bodyweight training are pushups, squats, and planking.

Bodyweight training builds core strength more effectively than any other form of resistance training. Many people prefer bodyweight training because it requires no additional equipment, making it a cost-effective solution.
